Senator. As a union army general in the american civil war, he conducted successful campaigns in north carolina and east tennessee btu was defeated in the disastrous battle of fredericksburg and battle of the crater. His distinctive style of facial hair is now known as sideburns, derived from his last name after a heavy load of war campaigns, many good, many disastrous, burnside met with president lincoln and general grant about his future. He was contemplating resignation, but lincoln and grant requested that he remain in the army. At the end of the interview, burnside wrote, i was not informed of any duty upon which i am to be placed.
