Wwii air medal citation chester w nimitz signed 02sep44. This is an original wwii air medal citation awarded to ltjg charles s. Porter usnr of vb-5 from the desk of and ahnd signed (blue ink via fountain pen) by adm. Chester w. Nmiitz usn. This typewritten document awarded porter with a gold star in lieu of a second air medal for his actions on 07feb44 by sinking an armed merchant ship at the truk atoll and then landing his plane back at the base on one wheel after the landing gear was shot apart by anti aircraft fire. Legend ahs it that he landed his plane cigar in mouth as usual and upon stepping out asked calmly anyone got a light. This document is only one of dozens of original usn documents from cahrles pop porter's paperwork signed by a famous wwii figure, this particular document is the only one amongst them signed by nimitz. Lcdr charles pop s. Poretr usn flew sbd dauntless bombers in wwii with vb-5, later served as a navy jet test pilot and then flew missions over korea in f-9f's with va-144 as xo. He was unfortunately killed druing a routine training flight in an a3d skywarrior over washington state on march 27, 1960. Porter was the commanding officer of vah-2 stationed at nas whidbey island where there is now a street named in his honor.
